Squarespace Designer Mentoring

1:1 Mentoring and Training for Becoming A Squarespace Web Designer

In 2017, I started my own web design business. Six months after that, I was on page one of Google, making more money than I ever had before, quit my corporate web design job and started living the (my) dream: working from home, setting my own schedule, buying my first house and able to pop back-and-forth across the Atlantic, or off on vacation, whenever I felt like it. I’ve been enjoying the fruits of those first six months ever since.

Once I started appearing on the first page of Google results for ‘Squarespace Web Designer’ and ‘Female Web Designer’, I’ve been approached by new web designers or those wanting to start their own Squarespace design business, asking just how I made the leap so successfully.

I hate to be the one to tell you this but there is no ‘hack’. There is no magic marketing plan, a course full of cheat codes, nor a secret social media strategy that will guarantee you success.

But I believe that a business set up with the right foundations, that provides excellent customer service, a valuable end product, and that operates with honesty and integrity; is well on its way to being profitable and productive – serving both you and your clients – in achieving your (and their) business goals.

That’s where mentoring comes in.

Can I become a successful Squarespace web designer?

People from all walks of life transition into Squarespace web design as a career path. Personally, I had years of experience building websites professionally on other platforms and discovered Squarespace in late 2017 when a friend asked me to look over a site she had built herself. But that isn’t the case for everyone, and it certainly isn’t a requirement to build a successful business.

What you do need, however, is a sense of creativity, an eye for harmonious design, and to be a stickler for detail. This, in all honesty, isn’t something that can always be taught – but you can learn the art (or science?) or pairing fonts and colours, understanding your client’s needs and vision, and how to bring your design ideas to life through Squarespace. In addition to design abilities, you’ll need to map out a solid process – one that’s smooth for both you and your client, and cultivate the skill of client interaction: how and when to set boundaries, how to make sure your work/life needs are met and how to ensure you’re offering value to your customers. And of course, you’ll need the right attitude: resourceful, positive, productive, and sincere.

If you’re looking to build a sustainable, profitable business, work with your ideal clients and offer them true value from a place of integrity and genuine passion (rather than because you want to make $10k a month, like, tomorrow), it’s certainly possible – no matter what your background or life-stage.

My Story

And more importantly, my values.

From the outside, my business success probably looks like it happened overnight. In reality, I set the wheels in motion about a year before I went full-time and six months before my first client build. Over that first six months I planned my offerings, I built out my own website, I brushed up on my coding skills, I had a photoshoot done, I worked with a branding designer and I got my financial ducks in a row. I’m convinced that getting that first stage right resulted in the thriving business and perfect-for-me lifestyle I have today. Think of it as planting a seed that you water and check on every day. Nothing is happening but if you’re doing the right things, you just have to trust that the seed is germinating under the soil.

Then the first little shoots of green came poking out of the ground. I ‘went live’ and had my first two clients booked in within three weeks. I refined my marketing, tweaked my packages and switched a few things up until they felt right to me – the equivalent of getting the right light and heat and amount of water for your little piece of greenery. Within a few short months that plant was bearing enough fruit for me to live off.

Two years later, my business was no longer a little green sapling. It became a tree that I attached my hammock to, and I’ve remained booked up with client builds about 2-6 months in advance, depending on the time of year, ever since.

I split my time between London and New York City. I also have the ability to travel to wherever I like and can keep on working, assuming there’s strong internet! When I don’t want to work on vacation – or want time off for any other reason – I simply block it off on my calendar. No boss to say I can’t.

I relish the fact that I can take a walk, work out, spend time in nature, meet a friend for lunch, take a power nap or watch a movie when I feel like it. Sometimes I get up and work early in the morning, sometimes late at night. My schedule is flexible and works around me. I’m lucky to have worked with clients all over the world. From New Zealand right around the globe to Hawaii and everywhere in between.

I started my own business to give myself a certain lifestyle and to do work that I love and look forward to. I wanted to work for a company with integrity. I dreamt of working on projects that excited me, with clients I could connect with. I wanted to feel I was helping people not companies. Now, I get to meet clients over Zoom from the comfort of my home office, rather than in a stuffy boardroom. I get genuinely excited when they tell me about their budding business, rather than listen to a well-rehearsed schpiel from a man in an ill-fitting suit and a horrendous tie. I also get to rest, eat and move when my body needs it, not when a boss says I can.

I have time to spend on the things that really light me up and I have more time to give to other people. And as I can travel as often as I like, I get to spend more time with the people I love.

I read a fair few books and blogs but honestly, I ignored a fair amount of what they taught me. I firmly believe the only way to build a business that Is not only successful but gives you the freedom and happiness you’re looking for in the world of self-employment is to do it in a way that’s true to you. A way that utilises your existing strengths and the things you love to do. A way that overcomes your weaknesses and the stuff you hate (well, mostly… I can’t get you out of taxes I’m afraid).

I’m incredibly intuitive and sensitive. I pride myself on getting to understand my clients specific needs and then serving them from that place and I’d hope to do the same for you. Your business doesn’t need to – and shouldn’t – look like mine. It should look like you. What we discuss and work on will be led by where you’re at in your journey and where you feel you need guidance the most. We can look at whichever client site you’re working on at that moment and you can receive real-time actionable feedback, or I can jump in and work out any technical difficulties you’re having and make design suggestions live on the call.

I’m often asked if web design can provide a sustainable living. I know that selling an easy six-figure dream is how every course on the internet is seemingly marketed these days but I’m no snake oil salesman. I’ve written about how much I make a Squarespace Web Designer right here, in an effort to be as honest and transparent as possible.

Feedback From Mentoring Clients

Previous Mentee Successes

SINGLE MOM

P is a single mom from Texas with no experience in web design, other than building a website for her hobby. She wanted to find a business idea that would mean she could have flexibility and a better work/life balance. After four months working together, she launched her Squarespace Web Design business alongside her full-time job, then came back for pay-as-you-go calls over the next few months. Seven months after her first mentoring session, she’d matched her monthly salaried income and was able to quit her retail job to be at home for her four year old son.

WANDERLUSTER

K was travelling in Europe after college. She studied graphic design and marketing, so had some great foundational skills to apply to her business. She wanted to get into web design to be able to continue travelling while working. We worked together for 3 months, took a 3 month break while K implemented some of the strategies we discussed, then collaborated for three months again. K’s focus was on creating a smooth client process that wouldn’t be disturbed by her changing timezones and would fit in well with her jet-setting lifestyle. The last time we spoke, K was in the New Zealand building a $4500 website for a wedding photographer, while getting ready to fly on to Australia.

RETIREE

B is a retiree from the rural East Coast – but certainly wasn’t ready to slow down any time soon – and started a web design business as a hobby that could produce some bonus income. He started mentoring because his background in sales meant that he could see straight through a lot of the sleazy get-rich-quick online marketing tactics and he wanted to learn from someone that shared his values. We worked on B’s design and technical skills, as well as created a plan for developing a niche in local small businesses. 12 months on, B’s business is growing fast by word of mouth in his local area, his sales and marketing background is boosting his client results and he is well on his way to $6k monthly income from something he enjoys.

BUSINESS PIVOTER

A was an established Squarespace designer, with three years of experience and a bank of previous clients in the legal and corporate sector. However, she wanted to pivot into more creative work and expand her client base. We worked on A’s design skills and CSS. I showed her resources and tools to push her design ideas ‘out of the box’ and to make her mock-ups come to life. After building a more diverse portfolio, A was able to start transitioning into serving a new type of clientele and is now fully booked with projects that inspire her creatively!

A Little Extra Info

My A’s to your frequently asked Q’s

Why do you offer mentoring?

I've decided to offer mentoring in response to the regular emails I received from new designers or wannabe designers looking for advice. I never felt that I could help someone adaquately in an email or two but that I could make a huge difference supporting someone over a longer period of time.

What's the commitment?

Monthly mentoring has a three month initial sign up. After that, your subscription switches to a monthly rolling agreement. You can cancel after the initial three month period, continue for a fourth or fifth month – or keep going as long as you like. I have mentees I've been working with for over a year as they see the difference it makes in their business every month. On the other hand, previous clients have started out with a three or four month stint to help them get set up and then returned a few months later for another two to three month timeframe to tackle the next stage of their business, or switched to pay-as-you-go calls to bring up challenges as and when they arise in the future.

Can anyone really be a Squarespace designer?

Yes and no. I think there's definitley a view circulated online that because anyone can build a Squarespace website, anyone can be a Squarespace Designer and charge others money for their services. While that may be technically correct, being a professional designer, rather than just someone building a website on Squarespace, demands a real understanding of concepts like SEO, good UI and UX, some basic CSS and a general eye for colour, spacing and balance. It's also important that you have a smooth and professional client process in place to keep customers happy.

If everything I just said made you balk, don't panic! I offer mentoring because dozens of genuinely talented individuals have emailed me asking for help on these exact things. You just need a little guidance to fill in the gaps.

But I have kids/I'm retiring/I'm a student.

None of these things matter. Having your own business means you can work as much or as little as you like. We'll work together to build an actionable plan that aligns with what's important to you and the practical aspects of your lifestyle.

As long as you have a positive attitude and are willing to put in the work required, it's totally achievable. I have mentored retirees looking for a new project, students hoping to supplement their income and moms who need a flexible WFH job.

How do I sign up?

If you'd like to discuss if mentoring might be right for you, you can fill out the form below.

Why do I have to apply?

I review applications from those interested in mentoring because I want to make sure that we are a good fit to work together. I am also still booked up with design clients of my own, so I can only take on a limited number of mentees as a time.

I'm not sure about mentoring. I've been looking at courses too.

There are tons of great courses out there! Kerstin Martin is a successful designer who transitioned into offering courses, a good friend and if you'd prefer a course format, you cannot go wrong with one of hers. We share the same values about all things life, business and Squarespace. She even did this lovely little blog post about me.

If, however, you'd prefer something more hands on, with more accountability and catered to your personal situation and goals, mentoring with me might be a better fit. You'll have access to me on email 24/6 and we can Zoom every other week to catch up on how you're doing and work through any issues or questions tha come up.

A trusted Squarespace expert.

How much does a Squarespace Web Designer Earn?

I’m not here to sell you some kinda easy, sleazy, ticket to a six-figure dream.

Nor am I going to give you en exact breakdown of how much ‘bacon’ I bring home to try and sell you my services. But the truth is you can make a comfortable living doing web design on Squarespace. The graph shows how much I made over the 2020-21 tax year. The lower bars on the left indicate the first couple of months of the pandemic – total lockdown for almost all businesses in the UK and USA. The smallest bar in the middle is the month I worked the bare minimum as I moved into a new house. Being a business owner gives me the flexibility to take things slower when necessary!… not to mention the income to buy the house in the first place.

What constitutes a ‘good’ income to you will depend on where you live, your currency, your lifestyle, your expenses and/or dependents. I don’t spend lavishly, I couldn’t care less about designer clothes or having the newest iPhone. I prioritise certain areas where I splash out a bit (regular travel, a personal trainer, good quality clothing, donating to good causes) but I am frugal with others and like to save and invest for the future. What’s really priceless to me is the fact that I call the shots on my working life, that I get to be creative, collaborate with awesome individuals and see my work make a real difference to their businesses and lives.

squarespace designer earnings graph

I enjoy what I do every day and know that I’m working every day for a business that operates with integrity, rather than for a faceless corporation

…and incidentally, make twice what I did when I was working for one.

Be aware too, that it’s unlikely you’ll be making it rain from day 1. The graph here shows my third year in business – though I was earning enough to live on in London from about half way through my first year. Building a truly profitable business takes time and being able to command the prices you’d ideally like to may be something you grow towards. Setting prices is one of the biggest questions new designers ask. Yes, people will pay for you to build their website but it is, in my opinion, only reasonable and ethical to charge prices that truly reflect your skills at the time. I was lucky in that I brought 15 years of web design experience to the table. The good thing is – we can work on yours together and make huge strides in 3 months!

There are also plenty of ways to up your income as a Squarespace Designer: templates, courses, monthly retainers, membership subscriptions. Personally, I don’t offer any of these, other than a few clients who pay me monthly to keep an eye on their sites for them. Despite the fact I could definitely earn more cash, I like to be working on new projects and don’t feel I have the time between them to offer the on-going customer support a course requires without giving up my free time – and that time is more important to me. However, the opportunities for you are endless and mentoring is all about working out what is right for you, your goals and your lifestyle and planning toward that.

I’ve never been as financially secure as I am now. I’ve also never been as happy in the work I do, or the work/life balance I’m able to achieve . To me, that is priceless.

If you’d like some hands-on guidance, an experienced point of view and a personal (albeit virtual) cheerleader; one-to-one Squarespace Designer Mentoring with me might be right for you.
